About the trail
The Great Plain Blue Trail closes the ring of Hungarian Blue Trails by crossing the Alföld, the country's great lowland. Talks about such a route began in the early 1990s and it was inaugurated in 1996. Its line was shaped above all by the rivers, with crossings of the Tisza basin found at Mindszent and Szarvas.
From Szekszárd it heads through the floodplain forest of Gemenc to the Danube crossing at Baja, then over the Bácska plains by Hajós, into the corner between the Körös and Maros rivers and across the Bihar plain. Further north it skirts Debrecen and Nyírbátor and finishes across the Bodrogköz at Sátoraljaújhely, where it meets the National Blue Trail.
Hungary's national tourism agency gives a length of some 869 km and notes that the trail has been divided into 13 sections instead of 10 since the spring of 2020. The walking is almost entirely flat, so the effort lies in the distance rather than the climbing, and like the other Blue Trails it is followed with a stamp booklet.
No source gives the days on foot, so they are worked out from the length at 20–25 km a day.
