About the trail
The trail carries the name of Pál Rockenbauer, a television editor and keen walker whose films about walking the Blue Trail are still remembered in Hungary. A blue-marked route across southern Transdanubia already existed in 1989, when he and his crew walked and filmed it, and the present line was laid out soon afterwards. It starts on Írott-kő in the Kőszeg hills, on the Austrian border, and ends in the wine town of Szekszárd above the Danube plain.
On the way it crosses five counties, Vas, Zala, Somogy, Baranya and Tolna, linking the wooded hills of the Őrség and Zala with the Zselic and the Mecsek. Long stretches pass through farmland and small villages between the ridges, and the total climb of about 9,500 m is spread over the whole distance rather than packed into high mountains.
The Blue Trail website of the Hungarian Hiking Association divides the route into 11 sections with 57 stamping points, giving 542 km and about 151 hours of walking. As on the other Blue Trails, walkers collect stamps in a booklet, and no fixed number of days is suggested.
No source gives the days on foot, so they are worked out from the length at 20–25 km a day.
