About the trail
Maramureș, in the far north of Romania, is known for its wooden churches, carved gates and villages where old farming ways have lasted into the present. The Maramureș Way, created by the Origini Maramureș association, strings these places together in a loop that leaves Baia Mare by Lake Firiza and returns through Baia Sprie.
Heading north, it reaches Săpânța, known for its Merry Cemetery, and follows the Tisa border country by Sighetu Marmației to Vișeu de Sus and Moisei. It then turns back through the villages of the Iza valley, among them Săcel, Bogdan Vodă, Ieud, Botiza and Bârsana, and continues by Ocna Șugatag, Breb and Budești to the old mining town of Cavnic, the Lăpuș country and Târgu Lăpuș before returning south to Baia Mare.
The association's website divides the loop into named sections of 8 to 33 km, each with an estimate of half a day to two days, which together come to about a month of walking. It also describes side routes around Borșa and through Țara Codrului, offers GPX tracks for every section and runs a tourist office in Baia Mare.
