About the trail
The Caucasian Trail crosses the northern side of the Greater Caucasus from Derbent, the ancient city on the Caspian shore, to Sochi on the Black Sea. On the way it passes through Dagestan, Chechnya, Ingushetia, North Ossetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, Krasnodar Krai and Adygea. Its first stage in Dagestan, called Patterns of Time, leads from Derbent into the mountains to the village of Kubachi.
The trail is being created by the non-profit Peshkom po Kavkazu, which describes a main route of about 1,500 km and publishes a complete track from Derbent to Sochi for experienced walkers. For the 2026 season nine stages were fully prepared, with renewed waymarking on some sections, and a cycling version is being developed with VeloRussia.
No source gives the days on foot, so they are worked out from the length at 20–25 km a day.
