About the trail
The Upper Svaneti hike goes through villages with stone defence towers, over passes and past glaciers of the Greater Caucasus. It is run by the Transcaucasian Trail Association, a non-profit that is building a continuous trail across the Caucasus.
From the Nenskra valley the route crosses forested passes to Mestia, the main town of the region, then follows the well-known trek through Zhabeshi, Adishi and Iprali to Ushguli, with the twin peaks of Ushba and the long wall of Shkhara, Georgia's highest summit, in view. Upper Svaneti is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and walkers sleep in family guesthouses in the villages.
