About the trail
The Great Ural Trail follows the Ural Mountains, the traditional boundary between Europe and Asia, through Perm Krai, Sverdlovsk and Chelyabinsk oblasts, Bashkortostan and Orenburg Oblast. Its walking route is more than 2,300 km long and runs from Orsk in the south to the northern Urals near the Dyatlov Pass.
The idea came from Vyacheslav Pestrikov, an experienced traveller from Yekaterinburg who had explored the Urals by car with friends, and work on the trail began in 2022. The first section was marked in the buffer zone of the Visim Nature Reserve, where a post shows kilometre zero of the trail.
The magazine Vokrug Sveta describes it as an all-season system that also includes a water route of 2,440 km and cycling trails of more than 2,000 km. In a journey reported in September 2025, the traveller Oksana Lytkina walked almost 2,400 km of it in 120 days, from Orsk to the Dyatlov Pass.
