About the trail
The route begins in the commuter town of Milngavie and gradually trades suburbs for woodland, then climbs along the eastern shore of Loch Lomond. North of Tyndrum it crosses the open peat and rock of Rannoch Moor before dropping through the great glen of Glen Coe.
The last stretch uses the Devil's Staircase climb and old military roads, ending in Fort William at the foot of Ben Nevis. Most walkers take six or seven days; May is the busiest month. The path is open all year, and midges are a nuisance in summer.
