About the trail
Lanzarote was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1993, and more than 40 per cent of its surface lies within the Canary Islands' network of protected natural spaces. The GR 131 crosses this volcanic island from north-east to south-west, through La Corona Natural Monument, Los Volcanes Natural Park and the protected landscape of La Geria with its vineyards, and passes close to Timanfaya National Park.
On the way it runs through towns such as Haría and Teguise and passes the Janubio Site of Scientific Interest before reaching Playa Blanca on the south coast.
Spain's Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food describes a 71 km trail in five stages from near Órzola to Playa Blanca, and notes that most of it can also be ridden by bike.
