About the trail
K'gari, also known as Fraser Island, lies in Butchulla Country on the Fraser Coast, about 300 km north of Brisbane, and is listed as World Heritage. The K'gari Great Walk crosses the island for 90 km through rainforest full of birdsong and past freshwater lakes such as Boorangoora (Lake McKenzie) and the emerald green Lake Wabby.
Queensland's national parks service gives six to eight days for the full walk, with walkers' camps at Lake Boomanjin, Central Station, Lake Benaroon, Boorangoora, Lake Wabby, Valley of the Giants, Lake Garawongera and Jabiru Swamp. Camping areas must be booked, a vehicle access permit is needed to drive onto the island, and walkers are asked to be dingo-safe and to keep everything in the food boxes at the camps.
