About the trail

The track follows the coast of New Zealand's smallest national park, climbing over forested headlands between sheltered bays of golden sand and clear green water. It is one of the Great Walks, with four huts and many campsites that have to be booked in advance. Several estuaries can only be crossed on foot around low tide, Awaroa above all, so walkers plan their days with a tide table.

Water taxis call at many beaches, which lets walkers shorten or lengthen the trip or walk a single section, and some combine the track with a day in a sea kayak.

The track is open all year, though it is busiest from October to April.
