About the trail
The idea came from the walker and writer J. B. Malone, and the route opened in 1980 as the first of Ireland's waymarked ways. It follows forest roads and bog paths through Glendalough, with its early medieval monastic site, over Lugnaquilla's foothills and across the Wicklow uplands, then drops into quieter farmland in the south.
Boardwalks protect the bog on the higher ground, but parts can still be wet and exposed in bad weather. Most walkers take seven days or more.
No source gives the days on foot, so they are worked out from the length at 20–25 km a day.
