About the trail

The Trans Bhutan Trail was a medieval trade and pilgrim route that linked the fortress-monasteries (dzongs), temples and villages across the country. Once a national highway was built in the 1960s the path fell out of use. It was restored, with bridges and stone steps rebuilt, and reopened in 2022 for walking and cycling.

The trail crosses high passes, pine and rhododendron forest and farming valleys, passing dzongs such as Trongsa on the way east. It is operated through a non-profit with a fixed 36-day end-to-end itinerary, and shorter sections can be walked as stand-alone trips from the main towns. As elsewhere in Bhutan, visitors pay a daily development fee and travel with a licensed guide.
