About the trail
The Tasman Peninsula, south-east of Hobart, ends in some of the highest sea cliffs in Australia, and the Three Capes Track follows them through Tasman National Park. The walk begins with a boat trip from the Port Arthur Historic Site, the former convict settlement, to Denmans Cove, and ends at Fortescue Bay.
In between it climbs onto dolerite headlands towards Cape Pillar and Cape Hauy, where columns of rock fall straight into the Southern Ocean, and crosses heath and eucalypt forest between the overnight cabins.
Tourism Australia describes a four-day, 48 km walk with accommodation managed by the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service, where walkers still carry their own food. Numbers are capped at 48 walkers a day, so places often need booking months ahead, and a guided version with private lodges is also offered.
