About the trail

The Central Circuit is a high-altitude trek in Rwenzori Mountains National Park, the range on the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo that is often called the Mountains of the Moon. It climbs through montane forest, bamboo and deep bog into a zone of giant lobelias and groundsels, then loops past glacial lakes below Margherita Peak, which at 5,109 m is the third-highest summit in Africa.

It is one of the wettest mountain treks anywhere, and long stretches are mud, tussock and boardwalk. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Uganda Wildlife Authority runs the circuit as a guided trek with huts.

Length measured on the OpenStreetMap line; no official figure checked yet.
