About the trail
The Lech is a wild river for much of its course through the northern Alps, and the Lechweg follows it, in its own words, from the spring to the falls. The trail begins at the Formarinsee, a mountain lake in Vorarlberg, and descends past Lech and through the Tyrolean Lech valley to the Lech Falls at Füssen in Bavaria.
The route alternates between alpine paths, mountain forest and walking beside the river, with waterfalls along the way. It crosses from Austria into Germany only near the end, finishing within reach of the lakes and royal castles around Füssen.
The official website divides the trail into 15 sections, from Formarinsee to Lech at the start to Pflach to Füssen at the end, and suggests seven days for the classic version or eight for a gentler one. The route is a partner of the Leading Quality Trails, Best of Europe scheme. In 2026 the stretch from Lech to Füssen opened in May, and the full route from the Formarinsee on 18 June.
