About the trail
The Heysen Trail is built and looked after by the Friends of the Heysen Trail and crosses farmland, vineyards and the Flinders Ranges. It is named after the landscape painter Sir Hans Heysen, known for his pictures of gum trees and the Flinders Ranges. From the coast at Cape Jervis it climbs into the Mount Lofty Ranges behind Adelaide, passes vineyards in the Barossa and ends among the red ridges of the northern Flinders. Large parts are closed during the fire danger season, roughly the summer months, so walkers go between autumn and spring.
