About the trail
The Amatola Trail climbs from Maden Dam into the Amathole Mountains, the forested range behind the Eastern Cape coast, and finishes in the village of Hogsback. It spends long days in indigenous forest, crossing mountain streams with waterfalls and rock pools, and climbs to grassy ridges between the valleys. Walkers sleep in huts along the way.
Steep climbs, slippery paths and long stages give it a name as one of South Africa's toughest hiking trails.
